This Midwest railroad lantern is all original with lots of patina. This 1895 Adams & Westlake Co. brass top bell bottom lantern is embossed on the top lid "C.M&St.P.Ry, Patented May 28, 1895". The beehive brass top is in excellent condition with no dings or cracks. The globe retainer moves smoothly when tightening the globe down in place. We find most of these on other lanterns rusted in place. The single wire guard frame stands 11 1/4" tall without the bail. The burner is marked "Adlake, Chicago" on the wick adjuster. It comes with a clear cast "C.M.& St.P.Ry" 5 3/8" tall Corning globe with the "Cnx, 5" trademark cast at the top on the other side. There are soot marks on the lettering from years of use. The top rim has no chips or flea bites, and the bottom rim has a 1/4" flat inside small chip that will not show when in the frame. When we found this lantern, the twist-off bell bottom fount would not come off the frame. We used oil dissolvent which loosened it off in a few minutes. Then we found out why it was frozen. Picture #10 shows the fount was rusted out on the inside bottom. It is unfortunate because the rest of the lantern is in great condition. This will not show when all together and will make a great showpiece in your Railroadiana collection.
