This is a very nice lantern made by Armspear Mfg. Co. in New York. This Philadelphia & Reading Railway lantern has lots of tin and solid metal and is in excellent condition. The frame has been cleaned of oil & dirt, then hand polished. It is 11" tall without the bail. There is some light surface roughness on the flat & horizontal guards, and a few small dings on the top lid. Embossed on the top lid "P.&R.Ry., Armspear Man'f'g Co., New York, and stamped with patent dates, the last is "Oct. 22, 1889". Embossed on the side of the fount holder are more patent dates, the last is "Aug. 19, 1913". The 6" tall red cast globe is cast in the round edge panel "P&RRy", and is in excellent condition. There are a few very minor small top and bottom rim flakes that will not be seen when in the frame. The original Armspear fount and burner are in excellent condition. Commonly called the Reading Railroad, it is one of the oldest railroads in the United States, founded in 1833, it served Southeastern Pennsylvania and neighboring states. This lantern will please that special Railroadiana collector!
