Regular price $3,995.00
Item #: 092883
Here is a very rare and hard-to-find lantern from Chicago, Kansas & Nebraska Railway. This brass top lantern is in very good condition for being over 130 years old. It comes with a diamond wheel cut "CK&N" clear extended base 5 3/8" tall globe in mint condition, no chips, cracks, or air bubbles, just light swirls in the glass. The twist-off bell-bottom fount is in very good condition with no pinholes, has the correct burner, and has a partial A&W stamped on the bottom. The first patent date is "May 20 1877 and the last is Aug. 22, 1882. The frame does have minor surface roughness for its age, no tin, with two small dimples on the bell bottom, and three small dings on the brass top. It stands 11" tall without the bail and has heavily embossed "CK&NRy" letters on the lid. The CK&NRy was formed in 1885 by Marcus Low, a former attorney for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island Lines), as its president. The CRI&P advanced the CK&N about 25 million dollars to begin construction in exchange for nearly all of the CK&N's stock. Essentially, this made the CRI&P the owner of the CK&N from the very beginning. The CK&N had laid down about 1388 miles of track, mostly in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Indian Territory, but in 1889 it failed to make its interest payment to the CRI&P. The CRI&P started foreclosure proceedings on the CK&N, eventually fully taking over by June 17, 1891. This lantern is sure to please that discriminating Railroadiana collector. You will not find another one very soon, so don't wait!
